The story of RTLA begins with a calling from God. In 2004, Pastors Javier and Cynthia Buelna received the mandate from God to begin RTLAChurch. They spent 6 months in the city of Highland Park building the church. Until one after- noon while Pastor Javier stood on a hill overlooking the city of Los Angeles, he heard God telling him, “do you want fish in a pond or in the ocean?” Pastor Javier understood that he had to move location. This led him to take the church to South Central Los Angeles. The move did not only mean a new loca- tion, it also meant a new mindset. While the church had initially been birth in legalism and tradition, God began to instruct our pastors to reform the culture. The process of reformation lasted years, it was lengthy and difficult. Most of the members, who were not in agreement to the changes, left the church by 2008. Reformation had brought not only a mental purging, but also a deca- dence in attendance. These seasons brought moments of change, fights, pain, and harsh endurance. But through it all, RTLA began to reform and create a new, organic culture. By 2014, the church had begun to flourish once again, this time with a new mindset and a healthy culture. Since then, the church has continued to evolved and grow in all aspects. What one day was only a vision, has now become a reality. Today, RTLAChurch has become an example and a leading church in Los Angeles and the Latino community.
