The story of RTLA is a testament to God’s calling and the unwavering commitment of Pastors Javier and Cynthia Buelna. Together for 34 years, since they were 15, they are parents to three adult children and blessed with three grandkids. In 2004, they received a divine mandate to begin RTLA Church—a bilingual, multicultural, multiethnic, and multigenerational community, designed by God to reflect heaven’s diversity.
The journey began in Highland Park, where, after six months of groundwork, Pastor Javier stood on a hill overlooking Los Angeles and felt God’s challenge: “Do you want fish in a pond or in the ocean?” This call for greater reach led RTLA to move to South Central Los Angeles. The move wasn’t merely geographical but transformational, shifting from a foundation rooted in legalism and tradition to one of cultural reformation and organic growth. This reformation process, though lengthy and challenging, began to purify the church’s culture, even as attendance dwindled by 2008. Yet, God’s hand was in the struggle.
By 2014, RTLA began to flourish anew with a renewed mindset and a healthy, God-centered culture. Today, what was once a simple vision has become a reality. RTLA Church is a leading example for the community and beyond, continuously evolving and growing as a beacon of unity in Los Angeles.
